Eve

Your coding agent starts every session knowing nothing about the last one. Eve is a small, boring, dependency-free way to fix that: a curated store of markdown files, retrieved automatically on every prompt.


The problem

Every session, your agent re-derives what it already learned. You re-explain how your system is put together. You re-state the preference you have stated eleven times. You re-litigate a decision you settled in March, because nothing in the world records that you settled it.

And it repeats mistakes it already made once. It proposes the library you rejected, for the reason you rejected it, and it does so confidently — because from its side, this is the first time. You either catch it, which costs you the review, or you do not, which costs you more.

This is not a model problem. Context is per-session by construction: when the process exits, everything it "learned" exits with it. A bigger context window makes one session hold more; it does nothing about the boundary between sessions, because the boundary is not a capacity limit, it is a lifetime. The real question is a systems question — what writes things down, and what reads them back?

A second consumer reintroduces the duplicate-shipment failure that ran for four
months (harborlight-manifest-ingest, verified 2026-06-18). If throughput is the
bottleneck, the note says to partition the single writer instead. Want that
sketched out?

The <eve-memory> block is verbatim output from eve search --format hook, run by a UserPromptSubmit hook. One line per memory, ending in the path, because the injected block is capped by dropping whole lines and half a claim is worse than none.

You did not mention the constraint. You did not ask it to check anything.

The smallest thing that works

A directory of markdown files, and about twelve lines in your CLAUDE.md.

That is Tier 0, it requires none of the code in this repo, and it gets you most of the value. If you do not want to run someone else's shell scripts, copy two files — the memory template and the instruction block — and stop there. The pattern is the product; the code is a convenience.

Each memory is one claim, in one file, stating what is true, why (the evidence), and how to apply it:

**Why:** The nightly reconciliation job starts at 18:15 and takes a lock on the
shipments table. A deploy that restarts the API mid-job leaves half-reconciled
rows that have to be repaired by hand. This happened twice.

**How to apply:**
- Before proposing a deploy, check the clock. After 18:00 UTC, propose it for
  the next morning rather than asking whether it is okay.
- If the reconciliation job moves, this memory is stale.

The **Why** is not decoration. It is what lets the rule survive a situation it was not written for. A rule without its reason gets applied literally and wrongly, which is how a memory store starts producing worse answers than no memory store at all.

## Memory

Durable knowledge lives in ~/.eve/memory, one claim per markdown file, indexed
in ~/.eve/INDEX.md.

- Before proposing an approach, read ~/.eve/INDEX.md and open anything relevant.
- Before asserting a fact about my systems or my preferences, search
  ~/.eve/memory. If it is not there, say you are guessing.
- Quote a memory with the date it was last verified. If the claim is about a
  vendor, an external service, or a number, verify it before relying on it.
- When I correct you on something that will be true again next week, say so and
  offer to write it down.

Done. Ask your agent something adjacent to that memory and see whether the answer reflects it.

On the two index files. Your live index is ~/.eve/INDEX.md, and there is only ever one of them: new-memory.sh creates it and appends a line per memory, and on Tier 1 eve index regenerates the same file from the store and becomes authoritative. Do not edit it by hand — change the memory and regenerate, because an index that disagrees with the store re-introduces a dead claim every time it is read. The memory/MEMORY.md in this repo is not your index; it is a hand-written sample showing the one-line convention, and it stays in the clone.

Read memory/examples/ for four worked memories, one per family. Do not copy them into your store — they describe a fictional company, and a store that contains fiction is a store that will tell you fiction.

Install

Three ways in. They install the same files and end at the same place. docs/11-install.md covers all three in full, with uninstall paths and the gotchas.

eve is not put on your PATH. The installer writes the CLI to ~/.eve/bin/eve and does not touch your shell startup file — that file is yours, and an installer that edits it unasked is one you stop trusting. So either use the full path, which always works:

./install.sh prints whichever of those two you still need, with the exact line and the exact file for your shell, and checks PATH before it does.

npm is a delivery channel, not a runtime. The package ships the same shell scripts the clone does plus a small dispatch shim. After init, what runs on every prompt is sh and awk under ~/.eve, called by Claude Code directly — the shim is not in that path. Uninstall node afterwards and Eve keeps working.

Nothing is installed behind your back. There is no postinstall script: npm install eve-recall writes into node_modules and stops. init creates ~/.eve and touches neither settings.json nor CLAUDE.md; wiring the hooks is a separate command you have to type. Verify rather than believe it:

Uninstalling never deletes a memory: ./uninstall.sh, npx eve-recall uninstall, or /plugin uninstall eve@eve-marketplace. The store at ~/.eve is yours to remove, and only by hand.

Not supported on native Windows — it is POSIX shell. It runs unchanged under WSL; install from inside the WSL shell.

The three tiers

Tier 1 is the idea worth stealing even if you write your own version: move the discipline out of the model and into the harness. "Check your memory first" is one instruction competing with everything else in the context window, and it loses whenever the conversation gets interesting. A hook does not have that problem.

How to verify it works

Which probe you have depends on which tier you are on, so both are here. Run the one that matches what you actually typed.

On Tier 0 (you did the quickstart and nothing else — there is no ~/.eve/bin yet, so eve-doctor does not exist). Verify from the clone, against your store:

The first command proves the agent is being sent to files that exist. The second prints the line the agent would receive. If it prints nothing, the memory is not reachable by those words — that is the signal to widen the title, not a reason to conclude the idea does not work.

On Tier 1 (you ran ./install.sh), run the full probe and read the bytes:

Every check prints PASS, WARN or FAIL with a one-line remedy, and the last one feeds a synthetic prompt through the real hook and shows you exactly what came back.

Do not verify by asking your agent whether it read your memories. It will say yes. That is a sentence, not a measurement. Measure the artifact: is the constraint that exists only in the file present in the answer?

Dependencies

Requiredsh, awk, grep, sed, find, date. Stock on macOS and every Linux.

A zero-dependency claim is only worth as much as its measurements. Retrieval is a grep prefilter feeding an awk scorer, with no index. End-to-end cost of the UserPromptSubmit hook — process startup, JSON parse, search, and the dedupe bookkeeping — on an Apple Silicon laptop, 30 iterations per row:

Reproduce it on your own machine with the loop in docs/03-hooks.md. Almost all of the fixed cost is process creation, not scanning: at 50 files the search itself is a small fraction of the total.

A curated store is 20 to 200 files, which is the flat part of that curve. An index would win at 2,000 and would also have to be kept in sync with a directory you edit by hand — so it is not built, and EVE_ENGINE exists only so that adding one later is a config change rather than a fork. awk is the only engine that ships.

Design decisions worth stealing

  • Curated memories and generated logs live in different trees. Only the curated one is searched. If machine output shared the directory, ranking would need shape-, path- and recency-penalties to stop it burying hand-written rules; separate the trees and that entire problem disappears.
  • Nothing deletes a memory. Age and status demote; they never destroy. Forgetting is a ranking operation, not a filesystem operation.
  • Reversals leave tombstones. A superseded memory keeps its old claim, gains status: superseded and a pointer to what replaced it, and leaves the index. Deleting it instead removes the only artifact that could stop the dead claim coming back through an old index, a synced copy, or your own half-memory.
  • The index is generated, never authored. A hand-maintained index drifts the first week you are busy, and an index that lies is worse than no index — because every read of it re-introduces the dead claim as if it were fresh.
  • Every producer names its consumer, in a comment, in the file. If you cannot say what reads a log and what changes as a result, delete the producer. A component with healthy throughput and no reader is the most common way an agent system fools its own author.

Each of these exists because of a specific failure. They are written up, with the general lesson rather than the war story, in docs/05-design-laws.md.

What this is not

  • Not a RAG framework. No embeddings, no vector store, no chunking. Two hundred markdown files scanned with awk is faster than you think and debuggable in a way a similarity score is not.
  • Not a plugin, an MCP server, or a service. It is shell scripts and text files, and nothing needs a package manager. In Tiers 0 and 1 nothing runs except when you press enter. The optional Tier 2 sampler is the one component that runs on a timer, it only starts if you schedule it yourself, and docs/07-front-layer.md lists exactly what it records.
  • Not magic. It will not make the model better at programming, and it cannot know that something it holds became false. A memory that lies is worse than no memory, because a lie retrieved from your own store arrives with the authority of something you wrote. Dating, provenance, tombstones and the grounding rules exist to make that failure loud instead of silent.
  • Not a replacement for your repo or your docs. The code says what you did. Memory says why, and what you rejected. If a question can be answered by reading the repo, it does not belong in a memory.
  • Not automatic capture. The moment anything can write into the store, the store becomes a log, and logs bury the six rules that actually change behaviour. A human decides what goes in. That is a feature and it is also the entire maintenance cost.

Privacy

Memories are plain files in a directory you own. Eve sends no telemetry and has no account, server, or sync. Nothing leaves your machine.

There is exactly one component in the repo that can open a network connection: the reality-reconcile loop, when you pass it --net, so it can check whether a host a memory asserts is still reachable. It is Tier 2, off by default, and opt-in per run.

Two of those three are prose — one is this paragraph, the other is a grep pattern in the grounding chapter for spotting curl … | sh in retrieved text. The claim is one command away from being checked, which is how a privacy claim should be written.

The one place your memories do travel is into your own model prompts — that is the entire point of the system, and it is why the format says, in bold: never store secrets. Store the fact that a credential exists and where it lives, not its value. The same reasoning applies to other people's private information.
